Services We Offer

Our highly experienced team of Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists work together to provide an individualized neurorehabilitation treatment plan for each patient.

At CNS, cognitive rehabilitation uses a combination of direct therapy, home programming, community-based services, and telerehabilitation in a person-centered, family-involved team approach.

Telerehabilitation provides another dimension to our clinic-based services when mobility, transportation, or pandemics interfere with coming into the clinic. Our team’s experience with telerehab permits continuity of services and maintains our patient’s progress in treatment.

CNS has been at the forefront of integrating other rehabilitation services, including vestibular rehabilitation, vision therapy, and audiology, into our programming, coordinating these treatments in our community and yours.

In those situations where more extensive interventions are required, CNS incorporates external providers for Counseling Services, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and Acupuncture to ensure a treatment plan that is patient-specific.

Comprehensive Evaluation and Plan of Care

Effective intervention begins with a thorough understanding of the person’s abilities and challenges pre-event combined with a detailed examination of those factors known to influence outcome following brain injury.

This intensive 4-5 hour initial encounter concludes with the patient and his family having an understanding of the current needs and preliminary comprehensive plan of care.

Diagnostic Testing

Concussion Treadmill Test
First developed at the SUNY-Buffalo Sports Medicine facility where CNS staff were trained in its use, cardiovascular tolerance after concussion provides critical information regarding recovery potential and treatment options.

APDM MobilityLab®
Miniature sensors positioned on the patient permits the recording of subtle changes in static and dynamic balance aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of gait disorders, movement disorders, and hydrocephalus.

NeuroQuant®
Computer-assisted measurement of structures inside the skull detects changes undetectable by the human eye. Detection of ventricular enlargement (hydrocephalus) following a brain injury can occur earlier using this technology. More detailed analysis of structural changes than a standard MRI can be obtained by this technology.

CREYOS
As a computer-based platform, Creyos Health provides a combination of established cognitive assessments, proprietary online tasks and digitized behavioral health questionnaires that have been derived from validated pen-and-paper tests with established clinical and research value. Dr. Adrian Owen, PHD, OBE, its founder, has used functional neuroimaging technologies, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to map the regions involved in these key cognitive domains. The result is a complete, research-backed, method for detecting cognitive impairment and behavioral health conditions that’s flexible, engaging, accurate, and repeatable. Real-time, quantifiable data regarding short-term memory, reasoning, attention, and verbal abilities is obtained that facilitates more precise clinical decision-making and treatment planning.

Nerve Stimulators for Headache/Migraine Management

At CNS, we offer alternatives to traditional medications in the management of headaches that can arise after concussions, whiplash, and other forms of acquired brain injuries.

Cefaly® provides external trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) using precise electrical impulses administered in both a prevention and a rescue mode. As an FDA-cleared medical device, it has been approved to help those suffering from migraines find relief and enjoy more migraine-free days. Cefaly® does not require a prescription and offers a drug-free alternative or adjunct to traditional migraine treatments.

Relivion® (https://www.relivion.com/)

Relivion® is also an FDA approved external nerve stimulator, which activates both Occipital and Trigeminal nerve pathways to address migraines. The device is comfortably worn around the head, with electrodes precisely positioned over the target nerves for stimulation. Treatment intensity can be adjusted to suit individual preferences, ensuring both comfort and efficacy.

Neurostimulators offer several potential advantages for the headache sufferer:

Neurostimulators for Stress Management

Neurostimulators are also useful for other conditions where an imbalance exists in the autonomic nervous system regarding the sympathetic (fight-flight-freeze) and parasympathetic (rest-digest) components. These generally provide stimulation of the Vagus Nerve (Cranial Nerve X) to increase the parasympathetic activity and counteract excessive sympathetic output.
